Evangelismos Station
Within this stop lies many beautiful representations of ancient human discoveries and the advancement of technology. However, as we continue to find these precious pieces of ancient history, the cost is, at times, our modern society, whether that be the displacement of homes or businesses. However, places such as the Evangelismo metro station exemplify the ideal that preserving ancient history does not have to supersede present-day society.
The artifacts found and persrved within the metro station were the remains of 2 kilns and a pottery workshop. There was also an ancient cemetery containing 35 graves and a marble sarcophagus containing a skeleton with gold rings, gemstones, and glass vessels dating to the 1st century.
One of the remarkable findings during this excavation project was the discovery of a 6th-century water supply system comprising clay pipes with holes used for maintenance and expectation. These pipes would have connected throughout the area and even had symbols that guided users on how to construct these conduit systems.
Evangelismos Square
There are also beautiful preservations of history and its consecution with modern-day society. While one side of the street one may find the Byzantine and Christian museum displaying accent artifacts regarding greeks history with the two religions as well as the museum of Cycladic art, the other houses the embassies and modern makes of the world demonstrating a kind of harmony between the past and the present.
Future for Evangelismos
As the area of Evangelismos continues to grow economically, culturally, socially, and historically, it is the expectation of both the people and history to persevere the thoughts, technology, art, and history of every person from every period. While there are some cases where excavation takes precedent over the livelihoods of everyday people, that should be a standard practice set, especially in a region such as Athens, which is a basin of ancient history. This metro station is only one of many others which display the permanence of history without uprooting the livelihood of others.
